“He stole 7 years of my life and took advantage of my desire to be loved and cared for.”

These words, spoken by S.O. a past human trafficking client, helped her to realize that during those seven years she could have been focusing on completing high school, deciding on a career, or deciding what college to attend. A realization that made her feel angry, sad, defeated and disgusted with herself.

S.O. shared how Safe Harbor’s comprehensive human trafficking program allowed her to receive shelter, counseling and case management which gave her the opportunity to return to school so she could pursue her dreams of helping others. She is now on a path of finding love and care for the most important person…herself.

S.O.’s story was shared during Safe Harbor’s first virtual Beacon of Hope Celebration on June 10, 2021. The evening also included the Beacon of Hope Award, created to honor an outstanding individual or agency that has been instrumental in breaking the cycle of domestic and sexual violence, or human trafficking within the Richmond community. This year’s recipient was Commonwealth Dentistry.

Commonwealth Dentistry has provided pro-bono dental services for our human trafficking clients since 2019. These services have been invaluable in helping to restore health and self-confidence to human trafficking survivors, whose dental health has been neglected at the hands of their traffickers.

We ended the evening celebrating our 20th Anniversary, with a special video highlighting our work since opening up as a domestic violence shelter for those in imminent danger in 2000.
