Abuse can happen at any age and just like other kinds of abuse, domestic violence later in life can take many different forms.
Physical: inflicting pain or injury by slapping, hitting, bruising, restraining, etc. Physical abuse can also be inflicted through medication tampering—over medicating or withholding medication
Sexual: any non-consenting sexual act, whether comprehended or not
Emotional: Inflicting mental anguish or distress through verbal or nonverbal acts such as threats, intimidation, or humiliation
Neglect: failure to provide food, clothing, shelter, healthcare, or protection
Financial: illegal use, misuse or concealment of funds, property, assets or benefits for someone else’s gain
Abandonment: desertion of a vulnerable adult
And what can be difficult is that approximately 5.1 million American elders over 65 have some kind of dementia and close to half of all people over 85 have Alzheimer’s disease or another form of dementia. Individuals with dementia are at a greater risk of elder abuse because of impairments in memory, communication abilities, and judgment (Metlife Mature Market Institute).
If you or someone you love is experiencing any of these things, you can call our 24-hour confidential helpline at (804)612-6126 to be connected to resources. If you suspect an elderly loved one is being abused, please report it to your local Adult Protective Care Services.
