When is the last time you treated yourself to a new look and a variety of desserts for dinner? Some of our Safe Harbor ladies did just that on Oct. 29 in honor of Domestic Violence Awareness Month. Shelter interns McKayla, Khadejah and Kim planned an event that they called Treat Yourself. Current and former clients were invited to the shelter for an evening of rest and relaxation. Stylists of the Glam Squad, a mobile salon service that provides bridal hair and makeup, came to the event to give the clients makeovers. Cookies, cupcakes, pie and doughnuts were provided for the clients and their children to indulge in throughout the night.
The staff and interns in attendance at the event watched as the clients’ faces lit up at the sight of their new makeup and hairstyles. This time of treating themselves was planned to give the clients a break from the hardships that they face regularly, but the event did so much more. These ladies gained confidence while practicing self-care. They were also able to interact with staff and interns in a casual environment. Lastly, clients were able to share this time of fun with other clients that they may not spend quality time with regularly. This girls’ night in allowed the ladies to bond over hair and makeup and brought a stronger sense of community into the house that they share.
Luckily for us, the Glam Squad stylists had a great time at the event and have asked to return to the house monthly to allow the clients to relive this night of fun.
Special thanks to our intern McKayla Burnett for contributing this post!
