Volunteer Information

Safe Harbor believes that sexual and intimate partner violence impact us all and we all have a part that we can play in addressing and preventing these complex issues. We would love to have you be a part of our team!

Due to state accreditation standards, if you are interested in volunteering at Safe Harbor, you must go through an intensive 6-week training series that involves one Tuesday evening a week (5:30 p.m. – 8:30 p.m.) and two full Saturdays (9 a.m. – 4 p.m.). Because of the intensity of the 6-week training, they only occur three times per year, in the winter, spring, and fall.

Due to the nature of the service involved in the various volunteer teams at Safe Harbor, we will be facilitating a process of conducting criminal background checks on future volunteers during the training series.  To be clear, the presence of a criminal history does not automatically disqualify someone from serving as a volunteer at Safe Harbor, so please just let us know ahead of time if you so have something that will come up during a check. There is a $10 fee that is to be paid by the potential volunteer.

Currently, Safe Harbor organizes volunteers into teams based on individual volunteer interest. The teams include:

  • House Team—providing supportive services for residents @ Safe Harbor’s house
  • Hospital Accompaniment Team—on-call and responds to local hospitals to accompany survivors of violence during medical and/or forensic exams
  • Court Advocacy Team—assisting Safe Harbor staff in providing information and resources to survivors as they navigate the legal system
  • Children’s Advocacy Team—providing childcare at both the community office and house
  • Community Outreach/Education Team—assisting with staffing ‘Safe Harbor’ tables at events and/or community trainings related to IPV and Safe Harbor services
  • Administrative Support Team—assisting with light administrative duties at both the house and community office
  • Board Committee Team—serving on a Board subcommittee to assist the leadership of the agency
  • Volunteer Engagement Team—assisting with guiding the volunteer program and supporting volunteers (conducting interviews, reviews, assisting with training)

If you are interested in participating in the volunteer training and becoming a Safe Harbor Volunteer, please complete and submit a volunteer application and someone will be in touch with you as soon as possible with additional details. We look forward to working with you!

…it was like no other volunteer training I’ve ever experienced. Each session was so incredibly thought-provoking… There is no way to go through this training and not come out a different person at the end of it.
